PROGRAMAS DE INVESTIGACION GEOLOGICA y PROSPECCIONES MINERAS EN TIERRA DEL FUEGO

Introducción:

A los largo de este siglo se desarrollaron en la Isla Grande de la Tierra del Fuego, en el sector territorial de la República Argentina, numerosos y variados programas de investigación tendientes a conocer la evolución y las características geológicas de la región. También se ejecutaron numerosos estudios y prospecciones mineras tendientes a determinar los recursos y probables reservas mineras  en los Andes Fueguinos y Costas de la Tierra el Fuego.  A  mediados de la década del ‘40, en la porción Septentrional del área territorial de la República Argentina de la Isla Grande de la Tierra del Fuego, jurisdicción por aquellos tiempos de la Gobernación Marítima, se llevó a cabo relevamientos mineros destinados a determinar la importancia de ciertas manifestaciones minerales-auríferas.

En el marco de éstas campañas geológicas en el año 1946/47, se realizó un estudio de los depósitos aluvionales auríferos existentes en el sector, bajo la Dirección del Dr. C. S. Petersen y contó con la colaboración del Dr. Eduardo J. Methol y el Dr. Raúl G. Sister, éste último también intervino en 1950 en otro reconocimiento de índole minera y citó cifras de la Estadística Minera de la Nación sobre la explotación aurífera en el sector entre 1940 y 1945 por un total de 17 kg. de oro.

A continuación se citan algunos programas de investigación geológica y estudios económicos mineros :

Prospección general realizada en el lapso 1975 a 1978, desde Cabo E.Santo a Cabo Peña y complementada por la campaña geológica de los meses de marzo y abril de 1985 por parte del Dpto. Geoquímica y de Aplicaciones Geológicas de la Teleobservación dependiente de la Comisión Nacional de Investigaciones Espaciales (CNIE).

En 1979 y 1984 se realizó prospección geológica y geoquímica para determinar la presencia de Zinc, Plomo, Cobre y Oro en la zona de Mina Beatriz, ubicada sobre el faldeo SO del Monte Susana a unos 200 mts. de las costa del canal de Beagle y a 2 km. al este del paraje denominado La Ensenada.

Estos programas de investigación geológica, estudios y prospección minera citados, que no son todos, por cuanto existen a no dudar muchos más, resultan hoy orientativos para ir conformando nuevos proyectos tendientes a la explotación de los recursos mineros de la Provincia de Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

Es también cierto que no constituyen el prospecto geológico - minero definitivo para la Tierra del Fuego, a la luz de los exigentes requerimientos de las grandes empresas mineras internacionales ávidas de determinar nuevos yacimientos metalíferos.

    Sin embargo estas Empresas como el Estado Provincial deberán hacer los aportes económicos necesarios para sostener, mantener y proseguir con los nuevos programas de investigación geológica-minera que se desarrollen en un futuro en la región.

Geological Investigation Programmes and Mineral Prospecting in Tierra del Fuego

Introduction

Throughout the 20^th century there have many and varied programmes in Mainland Argentine Tierra del Fuego for investigating the evolution and properties of the geology of the region. Many studies have been carried out to establish the resources and probable reserves in the Fugean Andes and along the coastline of Tierra del Fuego. In the middle of the 1940's, in the north of Argentine Tierra del Fuego, which was at that time under the jurisdiction of a Naval Governorship, significant studies were carried out to determine the importance of certain evidence of gold-bearing minerals. As part of these geological investigations, a study was undertaken of the existing gold bearing alluvial deposits in 1946-7, under the direction of Dr C.S. Petersen in collaboration with Dr Eduardo J. Methol and Dr Raúl G. Sister. The latter was also involved in 1950 with another mining investigation. he quotes figures in the Estadística Minera de la Nación (National Mining Statistics) relating to gold production in the area between 1940 and 1945 showing  a production of 17 kg of gold.

To continue, some programmes of geological investigations and mining economic studies are quoted:

General prospecting undertaken in the period 1975 to 1978, between Cabo Espíritu Santo and Cabo Peña, and supplemented by a geological investigation in March and April 1985, by the Departamento Geoquímica y de Applicaciones Geológicas de la Teleobservación (Department of Geo-chemistry and of Geological Applications of Remote Observation) of CNIE (Comisión Nacional de Investigaciones Espaciales – National Commission of Spatial Investigations).

In 1979 and 1984 geological and geochemical prospecting to determine the presence of zinc, lead, copper and gold in the area of Mina Beatriz, located on the south west fold of Monte Susana and some 2 km to the east of the spot called La Ensenada was undertaken.

These programmes of geological studies and prospecting for minerals which have been quoted, and which are not all of them, dispel any doubt.

Today new projects relating to the exploration of mineral resources in the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina are the result. It is also certain that they do not form the definitive geologico-mining prospectus of Tierra del Fuego in the light of the necessary requirements of the large international mining companies eager to find new metalliferous deposits. 

Nevertheless, those undertakings, such as the Provincial State Government, must make the economic contributions necessary to uphold, maintain and carry through new investigative geologico-mining  programmes which will develop into a future in the region.
